just because it doesn't use its own store, account, and shit camera tracking doesn't mean people looking for a small headset don't want it
(((business))) people want a headset that won't mess up their fancy haircut, and this delivers
I bet it'd render that fancy car model on a PC a billion times better than a shitty XR2 chip with a slight upgrade and a fan blowing at it
and considering Vive already had a large business-facing market with their "Pro" headsets and "Office" overpriced versions, this is an easy swap-in for anyone who bought into that shit

That does seem to be intentional, for whatever reason. Every reviewer has said it's about the same FoV as Quest 2, including shill who apparently measured it in his video

the foam should make it so that you get the optimal viewing experience regardless of face shape, as opposed to a generic hmd like q2
that said, I would expect the numbers given to be pretty close to what you'd expect to get out of it
tiny 1inch screens will only give you so much FOV

I preordered one. I feel like the design tradeoffs they made are overall worth it for me. Coming from the (relatively) svelte rift CV1 and the fat index, it'll be nice to have a really lightweight headset with oled again, even if I also have to go back to 2017-era FOV and refresh rate. I think what I will miss most will be the index off-ear headphones. Hopefully their stereo microphone is up to snuff. I actually like they're doing the custom face gasket too, even if having to go borrow an applel product is kind of gay. If you're paying that much for niche hardware that goes on your body, getting it actually tailored instead of generic (or having fiddly adjustable bits) sounds good to me.

With variance in the headset size and foam size, I guess they just wanted to play it overly safe. Q2 FoV would be a slight downgrade, but if nothing else good comes out before this, it'll be tempting. Definitely not pre-ordering one though.

Might be the battery, battery cable, or your wireless cable( the short one).
>>418690584 (Cross-thread)
Seems that my wireless adapter is a rare one that works. I've replaced the battery cable and hmd cable. I do get grey outs maybe once per session (5h). I even have 4 monitor setup with little issues. The only things that bother me is the greyouts (ofc), and compression in dark environments and the weight of the hmd(1200g). Once after a firmware update, something happened to the compression and the image was extremely clear. After restarting it went back to the compression. It can handle no or better compression but resets. Is there away to adjust that? I see "SetwirelessBitRate.exe" in the ConnectionUtility but I cant seem to do anything with it.

8GB of VRAM with a Quest 2 is pretty low because the encoding/streaming takes a little more VRAM.
Don't upscale as much and limit your download size to 25-30MB. Occasionally check people's avatars and hide those above 150MB VRAM usage.

Limiting avatar download size in your performance settings stops most of the niggas that use up like 200+ megabytes of VRAM
If you see an avatar with a grabpass (so if you see glasses with refraction on them for example), hide it. That shit takes a bunch of VRAM too which doesn't show up in the performance stats.

The CV1 was amazing. Good tracking. Not as good as lighthouses, but still more than sufficient and better than inside-out. Cheap as fuck.
Good overlay that was ahead of its time. The SteamVR overlay and the input bindings menus look like a sad incompetent joke compared to it. Cheap controllers and replacements too, you could get two controllers AND a third sensor for $110. Decent specs like resolution. Adjustable IPD. No facebook requirement. Access to Oculus exclusives (even though exclusives are super gay). Rudimentary finger tracking, years before the Index existed. Control sticks and two top buttons, instead of touchpads. SWAPPABLE AA BATTERIES so you never had to go offline or cope with powerbanks if your controllers ran out. Comfortable controllers. Good customer service. Decent headphones that were easy to remove if you desired. Only issue is the mic going bad after a bit and the headphones dying rather quick.

And all that for like $350 instead of the expensive dogshit we have now. Of course they just had to kill it for an inferior alternative like the Rift S.

You're ignoring or downplaying all the issues that were just as bad as current headsets, if not worse. You probably don't even know that through 2016 and half of 2017 there was a huge problem with the screen turning permanently red and the tracking was so bad that you were essentially forced to use both sensors 90 degrees apart and never turn around.

He means having to plug the controllers in instead of being able to swap the battery. That in itself was a problem because AA batteries aren't actually a standard size, so you'd either get brownouts when swinging the controller, and/or find the battery difficult to remove without damaging it. It was common to 'cope' by jamming foil and other things in the spring or compartment. The covers would partially slide off a lot in actual games because they were only magnetic.

If the Rift were released now, it would be shit on relentlessly, but it is remembered fondly because it was the first headset of many and allowed easy gestures in VRchat.
Anonymous No.418749971 Replies: >>418750408

only quest controllers have brownout problems and it's not a battery size issue, its the choice of cheaper weaker springs that compress too much under motion.

I'm not saying new thing bad, I'm saying the CV1 was an upgrade over the Rift S and especially 4-5 years ago, it was worth the money more so than the Index is today.
I never had issues with the tracking and I had my sensors literally just both on my desk facing my play area.
In comparison, setting up the 1.0 base stations back then was a massive pain and it took weeks for me to figure out a setup that didn't make me lose tracking all the time.
My CV1 controllers still worked after 3 years, I'm currently on my third set of Index controllers.

Oh right, the headphones broke pretty quickly and I had to fix that a few times over the years. I think they first broke after like 3 months of using them.
In the end I got moved into a very loud neighbors situation (couple moved in next-door and they were mutually domestically violent), so I ditched the attached headphones and started wearing noise canceling headphones over them instead. The mic also degraded into near-incoherency over the years when compared to a modmic or the Index mic.
That's one of the main reasons why I got an Index, but I will forever miss the swappable AA batteries.

I don't understand what people are expecting from the PSVR2? It's still just a console-tethered headset. To me it is LESS useful than a fucking quest while being significantly more expensive.

Seriously, what incredible breakthrough or technology are you expecting from it? A locked down headset on a locked down system that has a handful of titles?

It's the first option that isn't either severely limited in some way or requires significant investment in a high end PC. $500 for an existing PS5 owner is a significantly lesser barrier to entry compared to the $1500 or more they'd have to spend to try PCVR. It will also increase developer willingness to make VR games. If it is successful, then the effects won't be isolated to the Playstation ecosystem forever. VR needs to break out of the:
>lack of players because lack of games because lack of players
problem somehow, and this may help.

The Genesis and Dreamcast are definitely consoles that existed at some point. Not very popular and games were sparse, with most of the good titles being made by the people that made the hardware to begin with.
Wait a sec this is starting to sound familiar.
I think the main difference is that Nintendo wasn't going around snatching up promising titles or budding developers and reel them into exclusivity like what Facebook and Sony have been doing.
At least the PC releases of Sony titles over the past years give me a glimmer of hope that primarily PSVR-oriented games will come to PCVR too. And if the PSVR2 is any good then they might actually be real games and not gimped lazy ports like the pieces of shit behind Hitman 3 or Skyrim/Fallout.

We need good PCVR games
The hardware is chugging along slowly but what we really need is games
These AAA developer cunts need to stop shitting out bad ports of existing games and then blaming the lack of interest in VR as to why their shitty port failed. If Hitman 3 VR was any good and not instantly abandoned, if Skyrim VR was good out of the box, if Borderlands 2 VR was good, if PAYDAY 2 VR was good and if Serious Sam VR wasn't $90 for all the games I feel like we would be a lot further along. And maybe if more smaller developers jumped on the VR train. Full native VR support for Deep Rock Galactic (and not some janky vaporware mod) and stuff like that.
The only good big name VR game is Half-Life Alyx and even that is babby's first VR game with how slow-paced and scripted it is. Arguably most people who own PC headsets are just playing VRChat nowadays.

The hardware is hardly the issue here, it's the games. And a PSVR2 will not help get more games on PC. The PSVR2 library will just be shitty 2-hour gimmick games like the crap you find on the Oculus store, or cut-down "VR" versions of big names like what happened with Prey Typhon Hunter or Doom VFR.

VR boomers like Anton aren't helping either, constantly shitting on every VR experiment like No Man's Sky, claiming that PC's and players "can't handle" anything more substantial than a laggy unoptimized shooting range simulator.

It's both. As I said, it costs $1500 to play VRchat, Pavlov, and Beat Saber ad nauseam. No-one outside of enthusiasts will pay that. Developers haven't been able to take any kind of risk in over a decade and making games for such a niche platform is a huge risk that won't pay off when they can just make the same shit as last year again. Short of hundreds of mommy's basement devs appearing out of nowhere and making a ton of games, it won't change.

VR doesn't need some hit game. It doesn't AAA corporate committees. It doesn't need a horde of poor, crayon-eating normies. All we'll get is content for the lowest common denominator. All games will only have a head and pair of hands because the poors can't afford trackers. All games will be designed for teleportation because half of everyone gets VR sick.
The normies must be purged. VR needs enthusiasts. VR needs creators, modders, hackers building on previous work, standing on shoulders of giants to create something larger. Making a VR game should be as easy as downloading a prefab and then editing stuff. That way we can have games that take full advantage of VR. Because it'll be just that easy. VRChat provides a taste of this. It's the hit product. In VRC, you can buy trackers for your limbs, torso, and even for your mouth, buy the beefiest computer and best headset and see what it's like to game with 4000€. The users are building the content, hacking together worlds and avatars. Every other VR game fails to excite me. I want my legs. I want to see my friends in their avatars.
But I have an issue with VRChat. It's shit for actual gameplay. You can't even make a good Among Us gamemode in VRC. Udon is a lame duck. VRC is too walled-off. You can't really program much. We need a better virtual environment. For now, I'd be happy to just play board games in my avatar and to see my friends in theirs, but all the games in VRC are janky as hell, limited with what you can do, and you need to go to a dedicated world to play them. There's no reason I shouldn't be able to just download a chess set to my world. There's no reason to have to fumble around trying to hit a button or grab an object where the selection latches on to something completely random. Like, Jesus, just playing Mahjong, it's like pulling teeth!

Amogus in VRC exists but it's very easily broken and was apparently really hard to develop within the constraints of Udon, particularly getting the networking to play nicely. As it stands, the VRChat networking still has massive delays and it makes realtime games nearly nonviable. You may notice that the most popular and most fun Udon games or minigames are all either turn-based, or games where a whole second of delay doesn't matter. Enter a Pvp world and you will find yourself rounding a corner and then dropping dead from a bullet that was fired over a second ago.
>udon 2 literally ditches the node shit
Cool, does that mean in 2-3 years' time we will finally be able to use basic C# concepts like Lists? Will networking be less obtuse? Will the performance impact of simple calculations be less awful?
Udon puts VRC ahead of the competition but it's a buggy and awful mess with almost no documentation on how anything works.

I did try it out. It's okay. It sounds a bit robotic still but as another anon said, it's very very clear compared to other voice changers. It actually does change some of the qualities of your voice beyond pitching up and down.
It also is pretty much real time, there's a 100-150ms delay. It may actually be a little faster than my old voice changer. I was in the pre-alpha for this and the previous version sounded a lot worse and was too much of a resource hog to use with VR. This version I was able to use in a crowded and unoptimized map and it worked pretty well.

I think that it needs a few more voices and more options but that it has a pretty good chance of being pretty decent on future releases.

Not going to be the case anytime soon. We just don't have enough processing power yet.
Basically, right now vr has two major problems (or one because they are closely related),
1. proper vr development requires insane amount of competence.
2. people with that much competence expect to be compensated (aka they dont want to starve). There are not enough people who are willing to pay, and even then, the devs with such set of skills can earn 10x amount of money for half the effort doing non-vr stuff, which leaves us with enthusiast who are driven by passion. And there are just not enough of them.

Just like physbones and contacts, right? Or the UI update that would allow world creators to put their own menus in your quick menu? how long has it been since they promised that? how long has the UI rework been out?
>no documentation
Half the shit in Udon isn't documented, especially when it comes to networking or the way interactions actually work. Everything is hidden away inside inner circle discords where a few autists figure this shit out and share it with the rest of the inner circle.
There is 1 article in the official docs that gives a basic overview of how networking works, but it does not talk about any of the newer features or which specific methods/noodles to use.
then you try to make something clever and get the big fat error "Not exposed in Udon".
You can't even make a simple UdonSharp script that allows you to toggle a list of arbitrary components on/off because that shit isn't exposed. It only works if you specify the component type manually.
So if you want to toggle 5 mesh renderer and 6 collider components on interaction with a button, you have to make a separate array for mesh renderers and then separate ones for each of the specific collider types you intend to toggle.
the amount of times i have had to use animations to control a specific property on an object because "hurr this property isn't exposed" is astounding too.

The point is that it's only slow because we have to manually implement quicksort in an incredibly slow VM that makes even basic operations super slow. Any kind of LINQ sort methods are not exposed and coupled with the slowness of Udon it becomes downright painful.
If we had to manually implement LINQ it would be slow too, the point is that we don't really have access to C# or anything that's super useful.

This isn't a processing power issue. It's an issue of closed source and having to reinvent the wheel every time.
>proper vr development requires insane amount of competence
Because you have to start from scratch every time, down to implementing the VR. A game dev shouldn't have to worry about avatars, trackers, or IK or any low-level stuff. They should be freed to work on game objects where the controls and colliders on the player's side are already figured out. If I want to make a game about shooting ducks, I would only have to develop the gun shooting when triggered and then the ducks being shot. I shouldn't have to program anything VR related.

Correct. I do this because I find it funny to do so. But it doesn't mean I'm entirely wrong.

India and StackOverflow have been disasterous for the software industry. People are writing code they do not fucking understand and being paid to do so, entirely off the backs of other people's work.

You know what I learned in? Locomotive BASIC. If I didn't know how to do something I had to figure it the fuck out, not go ask someone else for their solution and just hammer it into my code until it barely worked. So yeah, when I see the state of modern software people saying "Oh we just need more, bigger, libraries" I cringe fucking hard. Can't help it.

It sucks having to write your own stuff for basic functionality, but if you're a decent programmer you should be able to just eat the time loss and write a small wrapper for it yourself. Just write that button handling, get it working well and then make it so you never have to touch that part of the code again. Do that a few times and you'll be able to get to the meat of your funny little game.
Bonus points for finding an example implementation of said boilerplate in either Valve's SDK's or online in a documentation/unity forum/stack overflow. Not everything needs to be a spoonfed NuGet package when you're making a small hobby project. No investors or clients riding your ass about getting it done within a short time.

If you want to make something that performs well nowadays in an established land like 3D games, you will have to spend extraordinary amounts of time and effort and channel a lot of autism to get things working. Then x3 that if you want something that actually works or performs better than the current popular premade game engines. Make that x4 to account for security issues people find in your code.

Fundamental misconception. Advancement is predicated on being able to use knowledge that already exists, not tools.
>Refusing to use an existing game engine
The 3rd party engine paradox is that they require more knowledge to use properly (fundamentals + engine specific knowledge), not less.
Existing language are basically useless for everyone who actually needs them. Developers who can make good games with unity/unreal, can easily write their own engine even better.
Only useful for insanely big studios who want to be able to hire random shmecks from the street and don't waste time teaching them about the inhouse engine.

I don't think it sounds all that great is another reason. I can only think of one or two people who actually sound female, most people just sound like dudes making a weird voice.
And even if I wanted to, I really just don't have a lot of vocal range and speak the way I speak.

Voice training is a lot of trouble for something I have very little interest in.

Are you using oculus airlink? Try virtual desktop from the oculus store, its far better, far more settings to change and customize for performance, and you can check what is your actual bottleneck in the graphs (network, gpu, cpu)

But i purchased a 5 meter USB-C to C, it claimed to be 3.1 gen 2 (which is 10gbps) but it performs more in line with gen 1 at 5gbps (2.6gbps measured)

i'll check out virtual desktop from oculus store.
which api or whatever should i use for VR?
SteamVR?
Oculus's OpenXR?
OpenComposite's OpenXR?

If you're just looking for free stuff to make sure it's not an issue with your setup, you could try The Lab or the VR mod for Half-Life 2.
The original Assetto Corsa runs better in VR than most other sims I've tried (iRacing, RF2, ACC). Dirt Rally 2 also works pretty well too if you're fine with running rally.
Not sure you really have any options other than VTOL VR for flight stuff, and that's probably simplified more than you'd like.
Only option besides getting a better card for DCS is turning settings way down. MSFS has even worse VR performance from what I've heard, so I doubt it'd be any better.

surely a 7600x is plenty fast
there is only a handful of CPUs in the world that outperform it in single core

as for the GPU, sure, that would be great, if it wasnt because 4060 is going to be a 8gb 128 bit bus 800$ card

gpu choices are absolutely terrible right now
and besides, a 2060 super from EVGA surely should be able to power most of this crap considering it gets sub 8ms frametimes in Alyx on ultra settings.

it just doesnt make sense to me why im getting 30 fps in war thunder and 20 in DCS?
And while i get 20-30 in raceroom, it feels even worse than that

I saw that apparently OpenXR and OpenComposite are highly recommended apps, but i can't seem to get them to work.
I can't tell if OpenComposite is actually working. I'm enabling OpenXR in it like im supposed to, and launching through steam, but i dont see any difference.

I have yet to be able to make the OpenXR toolkit work, to enable foveated rendering and all that, yet.

For whatever reason, the keybinds just doesn't bring up the menu.

Man, this shit is a real headache...

I asked about the development of VR hardware over the last year or two in a previous thread and got some funny replies. Am I on the right track considering these headsets? Seems like I can get them for $400-$600 used on eBay. I don't think I can justify blowing a grand on VR.

WMR and Quest 2 are the budget options. Index is ultimately the best choice but an HP Reverb G2 will be a nice taste of VR
By the time that headset is worn out and broken, you'll have already upgraded to an index if you stick around.

Oh I meant to remove the Vive, I had borrowed one from a friend in like 2019 so it's the only thing I can compare the others to.

I had an HTC phone in like 2008 and it was AIDs so I'm not a fan of the brand.

Leaning toward Index, but I don't have any interest in WMR, is the Index still better than the HP in terms of hardware?

overall yes
it not being abandonware is a big positive
Microsoft is basically out of the VR game and won't be supporting WMR at all afaik
reverb g2 has better res/display than the Index but the Index can go upt o 144hz instead of having the higher res
audio on index is also great, as is the mic; reverb g2 piggy-backed off of the Index's audio for a reason
investing in an index now means you can upgrade down the road to a newer steamvr hmd as they come out and not have to replace the controllers/base stations you bought initially

Interesting IK setups that allow you to make objects move in different ways than usual, or only trigger animations for certain people locally

Yeah, it's VRChat. Basically VRChat has a system that automatically classifies your avatar into a "performance ranking" based on a few statistics, so that people can automatically show or hide certain avatars based on how performant they are. This is necessary even with high-tier hardware.

This announcement is that VRAM usage statistics, which were previously not accounted for and were widely complained about, are now incorporated into the performance rankings. So certain types of massive-sized texture usage is now penalized, per say.

Ask the people you want to show the thing to turn off performance blocking for you. It's Crazy, i know, but it works! Then you can show them!

tranny Poiyomi and Tupper the gaslighter strikes again. literally this means nothing to the average VRC player. They're only doing this so trannies at their special events don't lag when there's a lot of people. as evidence in pic related. if only they took this kind of action against tranny groomers and pedos, but that would be attacking people at their special events and the dev team.

You can hide on download size. While it's easily possible to make a large download avatar that doesn't use much vram or vis versa, 85% of the time for a normal avatar, the download size directly correlates with vram usage. Simply because their import settings contain a lot of high res textures.

Face unlock even on flagship phones like the Pixel 7 Pro are just using a 2D camera and even warns you that it's easy to defeat. It also doesn't unlock everything, so you have to enter a PIN, password, or use a more secure method of biometrics to unlock payments or whatever. The Pixel 4 had a real IR camera but they didn't use it for anything other than unlocking the phone.
