I've come to understand my own upset about how /vrg/ has changed, at first I too was mad about randos but I've made a realisation. It's just an age gap thing.

I wouldn't say immersion mainly; it's mostly to make sure you look how you think you look.
In RL you have senses on which muscles you are activating and where your body is positioned but in VR you can't tell what facial gesture you're making. There is an immersion component; actually seeing your avatar move as you do links the funny brain cells into immersing you a bit more.
As for using the facial hud thing; I find that less immersive than an object in the world.

Actually that's a super common question and the secret is that the WHOLE eye hole is a mesh you can see through, the field of view is obviously hindered but it's not nearly like what you'd expect these days, you take FoV into account when making the head base before furring it.
The heat is definitely an issue you're right but most people wear cooler vests, have in-head cooling fans or spritzers and many people turn little accessories into fans that you can hold to the mouth of the head for a quick boost of cool air, so it works out :)
