I want to have a boss battle in my world - it is an easter egg and a meme so the exact nature of the gameplay isn't very important, but I would like to have some kind of challenge that the player(s) need to overcome to defeat the final boss.

Yeah the lightness and comfortability are what I'm most excited for. I've owned an Index (technically multiple since I've had to RMA the headset multiple times and it's still falling apart) since launch, and god it is so fucking heavy. Some days I get used to it, other days I can really feel that weight on my neck.

Bought a Rift in 2018, got an Index in 2020.
Tried Quest 2 but refunded because airlink and calibration was too much to deal with. I don't see any better options than the Index right now unless you're okay with sub-par image quality and don't use vive/tundra trackers. Some people might be okay with that. I'm not.

Literally all I want is an index with pancake lenses and a better screen. Eyetracking would be nice but optional.

I have worn a Quest Pro and an Index. Text is noticeably harder to read on the Quest Pro (especially further away), and the picture quality gets bad due to the video compression. Color depth is diminished. Edges have artifacts. Surfaces with bright colors (especially bright red) look like I have eye floaters. I am eating up more CPU and GPU power to encode the video data. My controllers lose tracking because apparently Meta made an oopsie with a firmware update. I have to restart the controllers to fix it. Sometimes they crash badly enough that Airlink detects my hand controllers as an XBox controller (yes, really) and I have to restart Airlink. Restarting Airlink in turn disables the eye tracking that I had bought the goddamn thing for, and all it takes is 1 moment of lost tracking for it to happen AGAIN and restart AGAIN. I think I spent more time outside of VR than in it, and I didn't even get my index controllers or trackers working yet.
Other than the screendoor effect (which is just as visible on the Quest), just turning up your supersampling is more than enough for the Index.

Were you using wireless or a GOOD cable?
It's very easy to get bad quality if you don't do it right. I started with the expensive official cable and had no complaints at all with picture quality. I'm sure it was diminished but with the massively clarity boost over the Index I just couldn't tell. Trying to use a Wireless router gave me poor results with very noticable compression. Nearly unusable honestly. Eventually I tripped while dancing and destroyed the cable. Decided to buy the official wireless USB transmitter

Tried Assetto Corsa as a wheellet, works just fine on a controller, you just need to push forward on the stick as you drive, that way you have more precise control as you move it side to side. SteamVR works with literally every headset. They've done an excellent job of making it completely headphone agnostic and just a universal system for any headset to work with any PCVR game. That being said, what you should get depends on what you wanna do. The Pico, and Quest, are both self tracked setups which is fine for 99% of gaming since your hands are somewhere in front of you, and losing tracking when you reach behind yourself isn't a big deal, but if you are going to want to move to full body tracking someday in the near future, either for VRchat or because you think future games will make it useful, the Index's lighthouse based system is far better then pure IMU based tracking that you will be restricted to without spending the price of an Index on trackers, lighthouses, and new controllers. The headset will not charge over USB connected to PC, it will only make it discharge slightly slower. I've had one that didn't go above 50% in the up direction from the second I received it. None of the six controllers I've used has had a touchpad with the full range working. AC, RF2, and ACC are all good in VR, but ACC needs a really good PC. Haven't tried AMS2.
Can second the recommendation for Dirt Rally 2.0 when it's on sale again. It's fun, and it's supposedly it's more controller friendly than most other sims.

Assetto is a go-to modding platform and content is endless, AMS2 has some very unique and polished content despite the engine that was kinda considered as meh choice by everyone around, ACC is the finest, most next-gen car experience, RF2 has best handling model around. If you're going into cars, this is a very competent bundle.

There is latency that will be noticeable in some fast paced games but unnoticeable for slower paced stuff and there is bitrate issues that will make things look horrible sometimes. Plus the extra layer of needing to use Oculus and Steam VR just doubles the potential software problems you'll run into and you will run into software problems
