Steam's just released the top 2023 VR-exclusive experiences by revenue.

Before you ask why VRC is not there, remember that it's not a VR-exclusive.
Weird to see OVRToolkit but no XSOverlay considering it's what I see everyone using.

I disagree. He's better than most but only because the standard for VR reviewers is so rock bottom. He's a big Valve fanboy hyping up a non-existent product and has made several errors which can only be explained by him wanting to see negative things. His Pimax Crystal review was a mess in particular because he did things like claimed 120hz didn't exist when I saw his ass in the chat talking to multiple people who said it was working on their system that he just ignored and never followed up with any of them. But went out of his way to reach out to some people who mentioned having issues, without them approaching him first, trying to get more negative things to say, not that Pimax needs you to try very hard to find things so shittalk them with.

He's got a very critical perspective of a lot of things, which I think is useful because there are too many people in the VR community who are allergic to any negativity, but I feel like Brad swings too far in the other direction of being cynical if it's not Valve or the BSB, the headset they consulted on a fair bit.

There's lots of fun stuff to do in VR, but I wouldn't recommend asking for discords etc when you're brand new. Just show up to stuff, introduce yourself to some people, and make friends.

My bigshit has begone itself. After taking a static discharge when getting up from my chair (which I've gotten before and usually just temporarily breaks audio), I unplugged it to reset, and it now refuses to reconnect/be recognized as a USB device. Tried different ports/reseated the connectors/etc, but I think it's finally dead. And their support is out until next year, so I'm back to the index.

>bigmeme sisters our response!??
I'm at least not worried they'll replace it, given another anon is on like headset #3. But it is suspicious to see it's that sensitive to static electricity. Maybe some weird design flaw. No I will not wear the VR grounding bracelet.

Also on the bright side I can now give some index downgrade impressions:

- The index screen is very dated. very apparent screendoor, washed out blacks. I can't read text in my desktop overlay without zooming it.
- 144hz is kind of nice plus large sweetspot, but I definitely think the beyond tradeoffs are worth it.
- however, thinking back to going from og rift to index, the resolution bump was quite nice; back them I felt the 'ah, no more screendoor' moment, and the index screens felt perfectly fine. So whatever screen resolution ratchet/treadmill effect is at play; If you're deckard waitchad, be sure not to try any headsets with better than index resolution or you'll ruin your experience.
- FOV is bigger, but not that noticeable; I think just all non-pimax headsets look like binoculars still, so the extra 10deg doesn't matter.
- I really don't miss the 900 grams of brick resting on my face and sinuses. the rigid backstrap and the adjustment knob is nicer than fiddling with the shitty beyond strap, but again it's just not worth it.
- I do miss the index speakers vs the shitty earbuds I have to wrangle with the beyond. I much prefer the off-ear sound.

You can at least replace the strap on the Bigscreen if you don't like it. I just don't think that the default strap does the job. You can get a Vive DAS and never have to worry about getting another strap ever again. No chink earbuds that can zap you or your headset either as the built in speakers are good.

Because the DAS is comfy, has good audio, and the combo is still going to be way lighter than any other headset. Built in audio rather than dealing with earbuds is way better too. You can buy a Quest halo strap or something if the DAS really bothers you. I tried the Beyond's included strap which worked for a while. But then I got a haircut and there wasn't much keeping it on straight.

In my defense, seeing the massive rally of thousands of users on modding discords rapidly join CVR and CVR modding discords, it really did seem like a rally was about to happen.

Ultimately they just fumbled hard, and the game was too unstable for the following year to actually be a viable alternative. Given all the modder dev skill at play, I thought for sure they'd make it awesome, but hacking games is a different skillset from building them it seems.

Does anyone play Battlezone Gold VR? it's pretty amazing, and is one of the few games that feels like a whole game than a tech demo. It's on a massive sale and would love to play a campaign with anons online:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/312650/Battlezone_Gold_Edition/

two notes:

1) The game sadly does have Denuvo, if that doesn't bother you, try it anyway. I never had any installation problems with it

2) it's a tank game, so you will need a joystock/hotas to play it as its best.

its no bottom of the barrel indie shit game, it's consistently recommended and positively reviewed game and its such a let down in my eyes.
I havnt played any VR shooters yet so maybe theres that but I know im gonna hate it if theres nothing to stabilize my aim on account of these controllers being so light.

I own and fired several firearms all of which have weight to them, even pistols have the sort of heft to them that plastic controllers can't emulate.

Oh and one more thing I forgot to mention, this game has a bug about saving your control setup if using joystick/hotas everytime you boot up the game, theres a simple solution:

Go on Steam and add a non-steam game and add "battlezone_dx11" from the "bin" folder of Battlezone's Steam folder (.../steam/steamappas/common/battlezone/bin)

Launch that non-steam game instead of the default, and you won't have to change your hotkey setup again. You might need to setup your hotkeys again via this non-steam game, but only once more.

There is a battlezone_Dx12 which might be used instead of Dx11 on certain computers, but I know most people who use this fix don't use it, so try dx12 afterwards if Dx11 does not solve the issue.

it's top hyped one, because initially they promised cool physics game, and never really progressed more than sandbox. But hyped somehow stayed.

It's a weird situation, where top rated games are actually good ones and the ones which got hyped for having one or two cool tricks, and somehow the hype survived (I guess due to all people who never try VR and only see a few webms of the game)

You want cool physics fightan with actual game? Play Tales Of Glory, Legendary Tales, Gorn, Rumble.

Compared to the mouse movements, left clicking to fire and right clicking to get a perfect aim down sights picture and a single button press to reload any type of weapon, if you are a noguns you have to learn how to reload each of the weapons, both with a bullet chambered and without, you have to learn how to hold the weapon to aim down sights, you have to learn how to compensate for recoil and all the stress related fuckups that happen when you get shot at
I can remember yesterday when I fumbled my reload and had to switch to my sidearm to not die, on flat you just press a button and the gun changes
To noguns this is as close to reality as you can get, with the next step being to go to a gun range and try out guns in real life

Been trying to get into broken edge but what the videos and players dont tell you is that its janky as fuck.
I know you have to move your body to move around but I dont have a lot of space so most of the time I'm just waiting for our characters to slowly inch towards each other which brings me out of the game.
VRChat, while not exactly a "game" in a traditional sense, is kinda fun but the only real difference between playing it as a deskie and in VR is being able to interact with physbones.
thats $500US just to flap some furry's tail or some bimbo's weightless tits desu.

I'm referring to the extreme twitch of whatever you're holding due to the combination of the headset interacting with the controllers not being 1:1 and the natural twitch your body exhibits.
The weight from a gun helps resist those twitches leaving only the sway from your breathing and stance.
I know there exists some games that simulate weight on their objects to reduce that janky feeling but there are more games that take the lazy route and make guns weightless.

Anyway; without further ado:

Into The Radius: Best single player VR shooter. By far.
Eleven: Best tabletennis sim game
Walkabout Mini Golf: Best minigolf game
Dirt Rally 2: Best rally game
Assetto corsa: Best general racing game
Pavlov: Only counter-strike type game
Last clockwinder: great puzzle game
Vertigo 2: Great single player VR Game
Cactus Cowboy Desert Warfare - Underrated cactus call of duty in VR
Ancient Dungeon VR: little random dungeon single life game with multiplayer
No more rainbows: Jumpy platformer
Thrill of the fight: Best boxing game (hard to play since it is physically demanding)
Walking dead saints and sinners is a good SP experience.
Half life alyx is okay

Then the mods:

HL2VR + episodes : Honestly canonically the best way to play HL2 now. It's so fucking good in VR.
Outer Wilds VR mod: Best way to play an already amazing game; If you only choose one game in this post, choose this one.
Portal 2 VR: Recent, works decently.

Eye strain and headaches: Adjust the strap and headset; since unbalanced pressure will do that. Also if you need corrective lenses you will want lenses for the headset too, since they come zeroed out at about 10m range. Motion sickness is temporary. With headaches I'm not sure.

Eye strain: set your IPD properly and wear the headset well, so your eyes stay in the sweetspot.

There are big titles as you mentioned worth playing, but I prefer the more under-rated and unknown games, here's a few not many know about for VR:

Final Assault: best RTS in VR (which isn't saying much, and its part-moba as well)

https://store.steampowered.com/app/793690/Final_Assault/

Horizon Vanguard: Best arcade shooter experience, webm related, I like the simple visuals, makes it clearer to shoot, judge it by its difficulty gameplay.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/598740/HORIZON_VANGUARD/

Ballistic NG or GRIP racing: Best VR battle-racers, I'm not one for reaslistic driving, I want to shoot, go real fast and have pretty visuals. These games are on point if you want this

bonus points to these mods/flatscreen VR modes as well

1) Elite Dangerous
Regardless if the game has no objective, its beautiful and immersive flying your ship to anywhere in the galaxy you want. You make your own adventure

2) Minecraft (Vivecraft)
Well yeah, we all know Minecraft. But I had some of my best VR experience playing it in this VR mod, very immersive sandbox experience which (like Elite Dangerous) makes something a bit dull actually fun and engaging

3) DOOM 3 BFG (Fully Possessed Mode)
Best VR shooter by far. Doom 3 is a boring game that does not fit the doom franchise... when NOT played in VR. This game with its movement, horror atmosphere and setting is designed for VR, 10+ years before it even was created. I love every second of it, even the repeated corridors/enemies at time felt fine.

4) L4D VR
Made by the Portal 2 guys, runs the same ways. Granted due to unable to join Valve servers for safety reasons, you can only play single player or local multiplayer (you can form steam friends groups to host versus mode which is fantastic!) It's 10x better than classic L4D, and you don't actually get bored killing zombies in this version. its got its bugs and glitches though, but if you can ignore them its very fun.

increasing the quality of a texture to 'high' will cost less and bring more fidelity than upping the size

Valve is very much like this. If you go back and listen to the developers talk about half life 1 and 2, they changed a lot of stuff based on playtesters not being able to understand. Basically you are at the mercy of the dumbest playtesters. And dumb playtesters get motion sick.

it's not like playtesting was good back then either. I think a prime example is AOE3's making of docu where they almost literally pulled off some random dude off the street and there's a whole segment where he looks like a deer in the headlights getting owned by the ai. Now that I think about it, it surprises me there were zero mentions of Valve's notoriously bad playtesters even back in the 90s' with HL1: they beat around the bush hinting at it but never addressed their notoriety. Maybe they'll talk about it more when HL2 gets a docu.

I understand why people would want a HOTAS (more expensive) more than a joystick for elite dangerous, since there is a LOT of controls for the people, which a joystick is limited. As per usual, a bunch of vrg got it, played a fair bit of it, then dropped it. The ones that really enjoyed it continued to play it autistically and got really good at it. If you host you'll get the pros joining at the very least. If you make webms and actively discuss the game you'll draw in newfags. If the discussion is good and sustained you'll draw in the old hands whose skills have waned. If the lobbies are fun and repeated the friends of friends will trickle in too.
tl;dr: if you host it they will come.

To be honest, if the first thing they ever tried was direct port of Half-Life 2 engine to VR I understand why. The first release of Half-Life 2 VR mod had the same movement acceleration and momentum as flat. And even for me, who has been playing VRFPS for years it was kinda weird and queasy after a few hours.

They changed acceleration and momentum curve in a patch, to have you in more of a direct control and the feeling was completely gone. A lot of vr sickness seems to come from having slightly indirect control of your camera

>trackers
Uh none of the above they're all mediocre.

Main choices are:
1. Home made slimes. The ONLY advantage is it's like $120 for a full set. Slimes have lots of weaknesses and drawbacks.

2. HTC trackers, with lighthouses. Expenisve but is the best trackers. Tundras might be okay too but they have massive support issues so if you have a problem you're fucked.

Aaaand that's it. Honorable mention goes to HTC's new lighthouse-less trackers, but they only support 2 headsets at the moment and they're both bad headsets.

id say its poor design of the charging circuit. Mine will somehow reverse the charge after it decides it full and then begin to discharge when its just siting on the charger. I also dont like the extra height and weight of them so i just strap it on when needed. anyway the charger keeps fucking the battery which leads to an accelerated death. As a side note, if you use those to keep 100% on the trackers, thats actually pretty bad for those batteries.

Ideally I'd want to do a little tracker mod and drill tiny little holes in the tracker's underneath and feed little power wires through so I can get something beefy directly attached to the tracker.

I think that it's the lack of any body or hands in that game. You at least get a Rayman body in Pavlov and can see other players with proper IK. In H3VR you are a pair of floating controllers and the enemies are just sausages with no IK. The environments being just grey hallways rather than looking somewhat plausible hurts immersion too.

I specifically mean the weapon interactions. There's an inherent loss of precision using VR controllers so H3's weapons demand an unrealistic level of care. I think that's the main problem. Pavlov on the other hand is far more lenient so you don't end up constantly making errors that are effectively impossible in real life.

With OpenXR that shouldn't be that much of problem but if the devs are used to working with Android targets already and they already had partial port of ioquake3 to Quest available it really makes no sense to divert resources to starting from scratch on PCVR instead of finishing the standalone version. Doesn't help that the guy working on PCVR port isn't exactly cooperative.

Dungeons of eternity is actually pretty good. Super high quality. Fully modeled vr body, physics interaction between items, amazing UI design, and a decent combat system with smart gameplay choices.
Reminds me of Deep Rock Galactic, but dungeon crawling. And this one doesn't give me any whiplash with movement. I think it helps that a lot of enemies are melee and you can juke them. Throwing is really fun.
Really big recommendation for Zukedrones like me.

Tundras are legitimately a good option for your feet, just terrible anywhere else. They are not as reliable as Vive trackers, but make up for it by being tiny and not being shaped like literal hooks.
If you don't move around a lot in VR ( i.e. don't dance ), then the compactness of the tundra will not really benefit you much, and it might be a better idea to wait for 3.0s to be in stock.
I originally got 3 tundras, and after a week of trying to make it work bought a single Vive 3.0 tracker for my hip and have been a happy camper ever since. Spare Tundra tracker is on continuous calibration duty.

when using a quest/pico + lighthouse tracking, the two tracking systems need to be calibrated by moving one device from each tracking system together for a few seconds.
Unfortunately there is drift, so you need to recalibrate from time to time. Continuous Calibration is when you permanently attach a lighthouse tracker to your quest/pico so it can just calibrate automatically all the time instead of having to do it manually.

not involved in this convo but wanted to throw in that continuous calibration works flawlessly, i went from an index to a quest pro with a tundra tracker mounted on the side and it starts up automatically and calibrates without me doing anything, and theres no drift or playspace issues and i do some serious movements so i would know. highly recommend for people trying to leave wire but dont want to lose their FBT.

ngl i tried it for the first time for the blackpink concert and it pretty cool once i got all the settings down. one really interesting thing is that in vrchat almost every public world is just a series of people reacting to eachothers avatars and then dispersing when the fun ends, whereas in horizons you basically have no avatar because theyre all generic so people introduce themselves in more normal ways.

Assetto Corsa cruise server will be available TONIGHT at the usual time: late announcement, I know.
9 PM EST (~12 hours from now)
Server name: Scarebro
Password: vganon
Track: Shutoko Expressway (yes, again)
>Features: traffic, track teleports for convenience, car recoloring via in-game chat app
Live weather data and time will be disabled for this event, conditions are the same as before.
Voice communication via the /vrg/ Mumble server:
Address: voice.vrg.party
Port: 64738
Prerequisites:
>The Game (duh) and probably its DLCs, namely the Japanese car pack
>Content Manager (a recent version compatible with CSP v0.2.0)
>Custom Shaders Patch v0.2.0 or higher
>Sol (free) or Pure (payware) weather control suite - preferably the latter which offers better clouds, performance, and customization
>Around 30-35 GB for disk space if you're new
>The SRP track and SRP car pack from their site: https://shutokorevivalproject.com/
Links to content are provided around the bottom of the server's description in the Content Manager server browser. Most of the mods will be mirrored here:
I have reduced the number of cars in the server from 86 to 48 for the anons that suspect their problems joining was due to there being too many cars last time. Not sure if it will help the anons that had trouble, but see if disabling the NEW AI BEHAVIOR module in CSP settings helps. I've burned the last couple of days adding 149 more teleport locations across the map and organizing them - though the latter task seems to have been a waste of time as most markers aren't showing location names in-game for some reason, probably since the names are too long? Not sure. All required content should be in the mega link at the bottom of the server description. As I said, it should be mostly the same, but a few cars were added/replaced. Union Island will be hosted on January 12th.

Experience from last year tells me that that isn't enough. Those avatars stick around in RAM and VRAM, they're just not actively being rendered. The animator controller also still runs (which is annoying as hell).
And the avatar itself is probably still "active" when hidden because half the time an avatar affected by avatar hider will still be playing audio sources. I'm going to turn up avatar hider to a longer range and just hide the avatars of people too lazy to optimize.

There are some good fallbacks in the list, people just don't select them. You can also always just make a fallback yourself, it takes like 5 seconds if you want to autogenerate one and the results are 100 times better.
If you have an impostor it won't use the fallback at all which is sad

I don't think 2 more cores are worth it, VRChat is pretty much single core anyway, so going from 6 to 8 cores will do nothing performance wise for VRChat.

I mean, it's not really grandma driving if you're using all of the limited grip available, it just ends up feeling slow because there's so little grip. Imo the biggest hitler of monaco are those inbetween sections with clear asphalt+ice patches. If you manually hold the headset and force it into the best position for your eyes, is it still bad? either squishing the gasket, or take off the gasket and just hold it.

I think usually there is a really good sweet spot but the 3d scanned gasket and strap doesn't naturally hold you there, due to bad scanning or QC or whatever. Which is annoying but at least you can cope by knowing it's theoretically possible to have a good picture.

VRChat killer is a bit much but it could have been a proper GMOD VR.

i think gmod 2 (s&box) is adding vr support, i saw a post about them getting it working a couple years back. i haven't kept up with development though so i don't know if they kept it in. fuck knows when it will be released too

i literally don't use mine because the FOV is aggressively mediocre and only tolerable when drunk. And the sweet spot even in the best case scenario won't be good, you WILL have to directly face anything you're looking at.

Somebody here said last week it's possible to pirate models off Gumroad, any info on that? Need something from a model but he will only sell it as one piece and I"m not paying $50 for one small asset

I'm keeping up with it, it's a fun way to mess around with friends and go through a few levels but it's more like Boneworks MP than GMOD.
Also 99% of the mod authors are developing it with Quest in mind which limits options

They did sell them, it's based on XTAL which is why it has the high quality MR module.

You can 3D print something like https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6377613 to use the headset without a gasket which should improve FOV.

The ability to see your hand over things as opposed to current MR where every virtual element displays over every real element. Feels like a cheap stick on rather than proper MR. Q3 fixed the enviromental issue somehow by making a mesh from your surroundings but having a 5m away creature rendering over your 20cm away hands destroys inmersion and induces motion sickness

they're using some techbro rapid-prototyping method with lidar scans and 3d printing.
you could get a better result by smooshing your face into a block of oasis foam.
