That was a mistake honestly. They've just dropped a version so early that it can barely be called an alpha, and now it's time for them to get shit on. I don't think ACE lacks any fundamentals so far and I hope for a good ending, but god damn, there's literally nothing to enjoy in there for now. There's a pretty fun driving model but you can barely notice it in cinematic 24fps in VR, there's a promising amount of audio effects but audio balance feels all over the place, VR is not your typical UE blurriness, but how could you even notice that when you have to drop the resolution down to 800x600 just to play it smooth.

Should've been a closed alpha, or some hidden pre-release, not an item on the steam store page.

From what I see from VR threads in /g/ and /v/ is that for most people, VR is just an expensive gimmick. They don't know how good it is, and because they're too poor to try it out, or too stupid to visualise it, they never will. They constantly embrace the sourness of the grapes, latching onto irrelevancies like motion sickness and screen door effects.
Another group has VR headsets but they're dust collectors. They bought it, tried it, but then they feel there's nothing to do with it (except porn maybe). A few cases where they never got over the motion sickness because they never played enough.
Actual VRC players I never really see, presumably because they're all here or crossposting from here anyway.

The takeaway is that most people with VR headsets do not play VRC. Most try and just play normal VR games, and then find that.. it isn't really that good. They say oh well alyx was good or had one other game they thought was okay but they never really got into the meat of VR, they just see alyx and then that's it.

so overall the problem is not VRC, but exposure. People just don't know that other VR games exist.

No one is too poor for 300 bucks. They just don't want to try it.

VR games suck. Desktop games that support VR on the other hand, there needs to be more of. I get most of my usage time on Assetto Corsa, because nothing beats VR for racing sims, and the asking price of a Quest 2 (3S now I guess) is a drop in the bucket compared to the price of every other peripheral you want to involve with getting a good racing rig set up.

I've been running haritorax wireless for a year now and people genuinly are suprised by my tracking, it's not because they are good trackers, but because I've managed to tweak my settings, and room setup until they work well.
my reasoning is because the wireless 2 trackers claim to have fixed the rotational drift issue, and the skating/sliding feet tracking issue, and if that's the case, then my drift would be basically nonexistent.

I'm just hoping a 5070 TI will be enough for my AC1 needs. I'm still on an aging 1080 here on a Quest2 which is 'fine' for a tuned config of a mix of low/medium which gets me roughly a locked 80fps~ with native resolution and some barebones anti-aliasing.

parting thoughts are that it's a 7.5/10 as a game, but a 9/10 with the VR mechanics

as someone who only got a VR headset a few months ago and who still is in a lot of flat gaming circles, most people think HL Alyx is a tech demo and not a full game, because they have never played it. Aside from VRC and HL Alyx, they don't even know of other VR games and assume that if they were significant and good, they would have heard about them. It's really hard to accurately capture the VR experience in a flat video format. As a result of all this, PCVR is less than 2% of all steam users. Too small a market for big games to be viable. It's growing nevertheless, but it will be some years before the normie gamers wake up to VR being a double digit percentage.

As much as people don't like quest kids, meta has really good market penetration with that demographic. When they turn into adults after growing up with Gorilla Tag, they are going to want to play and make VR games with whatever the cutting edge VR tech of that time will be. I think we'll see a big surge in VR popularity in 5 to 10 years.

This is the biggest problem IMO, VR is stuck in a marketing blackhole because the core experience can't be demonstrated in a simple video on a flatscreen. It's impossible to sell to someone how having depth perception in these 3D spaces is an absolute mindblowing experience that will likely ruin regular gaming for you. Even Skyrim VR, which is a half-assed port (not as lazy as Fallout 4), becomes a much more enthralling experience compared to the base game. With two simple mods, Skyrim VR has the same functional-interactions as Half Life:Alyx as well. I could never go back to regular Skyrim.

It's even worse than that. The head and hand movement does not translate well to a video at all. When you move your head in reality, the brain keeps the orientation of the world constant, but in a video it actually rotates. Your brain filters out muscle tremors entirely if you're not focusing on it. It's the same problem as how cutlery is absurdly loud in audio recordings but not at all in real life. The carefully curated camera movement and animations of modern games makes it even worse and falsely contextualizes it as poorly made. Ironically, VR recordings are probably most palatable in third person.

Anon you got incredibly lucky with that swapping of cables between PSUs. There is no real standard in the pinouts of the PSUs, those can vary even between small revisions of the same PSU model.
