If it's being sold at a loss or cost there must be something eating up a huge chunk of their budget then, presumably something planned from early in development if it takes priority over the display quality.
I've always had my doubts that Valve would go with uOLED, like everyone seems to want, when all the rumors of standalone and flat gaming have swirled. If Valve have something ambitious in that regard planned it would be costly but so far a snapdragon chip alone doesn't make sense.

You have to go through a lot of effort, consider if you are using your VR headset for terrorism (unlikely)

It has to connect to the internet at setup, you can use fake credentials for an account but you set it up with an meta app on your phone that wont work without internet and GPS turned on. Best you can do is a burner device to put the app on and be in public location, you can try public wifi, then install any apps you need and never connect the headset to the internet again. You can't update the apps though. If it connects to the internet it can tell zuck every bluetooth and wifi device in the area and they can locate you with a map of those. As far as I know people watch the network traffick of these and it doesn't upload screenshots of your VR or passthrough to zuck. Zuck does want to know your location and the exact shape of your interior rooms though. That's just weird in itself.

Long story short for HDR to have a point you have to show really dark and really bright pixels at the same time. Nobody is policing what you can call HDR. In the TV world it just became a buzzword for TVs that can play HDR10 or dolby vision formatted HDR video, you see an HDR logo in the corner of the screen, but it had little to do with how good the black level was or how bright the tv got.

Push is better on small to medium sized maps. I don't know why the mappers and server hosts choose retardedly huge maps that almost never have enough people in the server to play well. Then we finally get a smaller one and the layout is tremendously dogshit. I have more fun playing Push on the Quest version now because the custom maps are low filesize and the map pool isn't filled with these run and snipe maps.

what's it like using lighthouses? I don't mean the tracking, I assume that's superior in every way.
What I mean is, how do they function in every day use?
I live somewhere with a bad power grid. Brownouts, blackouts, low voltage, these are all things that happen maybe once a month if the weather is nice.
My pc is hooked up to a nice UPS, but I don't have much capacity left on it to plug more stuff into it.
I've heard of lighthouses ack'ing themselves, are they something I can power down and unplug each night? Or do they have a long startup time/need to be re calibrated if I'm turning them off?
BSB2/Meganex are pretty appealing, even though I'd need lighthouses and controllers as well. Holding out hope for deckard or pimax dream air, mostly because I think there would be a lot of occlusion in my room for lighthouses.

You just plug them into power and in 20-30 seconds they stabilize their spin and are ready to work. You can use Bluetooth app to put them to sleep without unplugging. With mine 1.0 lighthouses I just use a plug with a button to turn on/off the master one, slave lighthouse notices that master is off and turns off itself.

With often blackouts/brownouts you'd want to plug them to something stabilized, they are basically hard drive motors which need to spin at a precise frequency so, you don't want to damage them. They don't need much power, just a few watts.

SteamVR room setup remembers the position of your floor/boundary in relation to lighthouses, and as long you don't move them it just works.

A used Quest 2 can be gotten for like 150 bucks, and paying near double the price of that for a Quest 3S is a sucker move because the 3S is trash compared to the 3. You get a used Quest 2 because it's the cheapest entry into the hobby, and then can resell it for most of the money to some other sucker when you upgrade to a Quest 3 or whatever headset you decide on. Yes. The lenses being pancake instead of fresnel is a huge difference in edge to edge clarity. You can read text that goes across your view without having to manually move your head to point at the section you're trying to read on a Quest 2, to give you a way to imagine it, or in my big use case, I'm able to clearly see the hole out of the corner of my eye while looking at the ball in minigolf. 2 and 3S lenses are usable, but clearly outdated and the price difference between a 3 and 3S isn't worth the huge downgrade if you actually use your headset a lot.

Q2 is fine as the first headset.

The quest 2 has worse latency and can't do higher bandwidth like the quest 3/s because it has a slower processor that can't decode the video stream fast enough. Quest 3/s can also do 6ghz if 5ghz is congested in your area.

having never used clip-ons it took a few weeks for my ears to get used to them long term, so I was swapping them out for my sennheisers when my ears got too fatigued
nowadays they're very comfortable and super light; and the sound quality unironically punches WAY above its pricetag missing out only on like heavy bass "feeling" since the drivers aren't large enough to produce the same kinda sound waves you might get out of much larger drivers
fixed cable is a bummer if a cat chews them but since they're like $20 its an easy fix
