Steamvr may have some built in function, I haven't looked for it. VR Chat's in game camera is a lot more flexible, but for other games I usually record the flat output via OBS and can take stills or clips from the video if I care. Since I use a quest I've used it's internal screenshot function too.

Yes hold down trigger and press the steamvr overlay menu button. Quest controllers you have to do it with your left hand otherwise it brings up the meta menu and doesn't take the screenshot. It'll take two screenshots. One that shows both eyes and one that shows the left eye. Pic related. It's saved in the same location as your usual F12 screenshots.

I honestly think better quality IMU tracking is the future. Lighthouse tracking has been used for games and movies for a while now where a full motion capture suit isn't required, but I've read that now the higher end IMU trackers are starting to get used in game production. The technology has come a long way and is a lot cheaper and more flexible than lighthouses, but still the average slime clones are not there yet.

Default booth rendering split per draw calls, versus booth with atlas and joined into four separate meshes. Dunno, maybe some new anon will find it surprising - this is what your computer does every single frame, and then separately for every single avatar you see in game. More draw calls, more GPU sadness. Though one thing I didn't realize is that outline is a separate fake mesh with its own separate draw call, I guess that's where joining meshes helps a bit.

Yes, you need CATS and pretty much nothing else. For a basic scenario:
>make your avatar in blender, so get base in, put any clothes you want, delete things you don't want, yadda yadda
>merge armatures with CATS
>create an atlas with CATS, it's automated in one button. you'll have to select which materials you want to combine, you probably want to avoid joining transparencies for easier time, so just merge clothes, body skin, accessories, all into one
>join meshes into face/body/clothes/hair, you can join them further if you want to, but this is plenty
>once you'll import your new fbx in unity, you'll have to make a new material for your unified atlas
>in material, feel free to put masks to a good use. you can use masks to remove outline where you don't want to have it, you can use masks to make avatar more/less shiny in different places, you can use them for just about anything. You can import mask as, let's say, 1024 texture instead of 4k+ if you don't need detail for extra performance points and less VRAM usage, this can be set in texture import settings

You should basically be avoiding cats auto atlas. It's a complete waste of time for most things. It's designed for use on MMDs where there's like 50 materials and each one is a 64x64 texture that's just a belt buckle or something. For booths, textures are already pre-atlased, they have the entire jacket/pants/etc assembly on one texture most of the time. If you're mixing and matching parts it's way better to assemble a new UV.

I will give credit to CATS tho - when I did get it working, I managed to decimate a foxipaw furry avatar right below 70000 polygons while keeping every single shapekey and face emote intact so I could then easily work from there to make it Medium performance

It's true that Material Combiner often wastes lots of space on a texture, but I usually end up with an useful 4k. You can either fix it up yourself in UV editor, or reduce resolution in import and see if you like the result. This sample Nemesis is 8k by 4k, but atlas contains transparencies, it's basically one atlas for the whole avatar, and I can't tell texture quality difference by eye, though one could argue it's because this chibi avatar is rather cartoonish.

But for the starting point, I think it's less about having a perfect result, and more about getting a hang of it with minimum pain. Once someone's into basic optimizations, fiddling with it further will be a natural consequence. I mildly dislike >>542978386 tutorial for that reason: while it's undeniably a wonderful resource, and it doesn't waste any space on unnecessary info, it's such a huge and scary wall of technical text. In reality you can win a whole lot with very minimal effort, pop shit in blender, click on material combiner, paint some masks, world becomes a tiny bit better place. If I were new to it and I'd look at this tutorial, I'd probably decide that after all it's okay to have default booth because everyone uses an unoptimized avatar anyway.

Does assetto corsa just look and run like shit in vr? Similar with ETS2 it just looks dreadful in the headset, all shimmery and and pixelly. AA fixes nothing, and running at 2x res improves it somewhat but then brings me to like 30 frames

I'm sure that you could get AC to look great in VR if you take the time to do so

if you want out of the box good VR grafix and support I recommend automobilista 2. may not be everyone's favorite sim for one reason or another, and it's multiplayer support is no where near as robust as AC, but it just kinda works for single player VR driving. The ultimate edition with all the dlc goes on sale enough that you can probably get it cheap on a key site. They're still updating it frequently etc. I love AMS2 but I'm a relatively new racist

You're trying too hard. AC looks good by default. CSP makes it better, and if its too heavy on your gpu you just turn off lightingfx module. Its clear, sharp and properly antialiased. Its great.

At this point, entry-level DDs are not all that more expensive than good old G29. G29 is a good starter kit for 250eur if you don't feel comfortable with spending more money, but if you know you're into cars, you can have cheapest fanatec CSL DD bundle for 400eur (it goes on sales all the time). Basic english suggests that as long as d4rk has "Apply on upload" checkbox checked, this thing will work as expected for the final result. But you can check it empirically, and then you'll feel safer knowing everything is fine. Upload a version without d4rk script on avatar, check avatar statistics in vrchat, save them somewhere on the side, upload a version with d4rk script on, see if performance numbers got any lower.

The thing about 2025 booth kitbashing process is that we've got multiple frameworks and layers of abstraction now, so every time you enter play mode, your avatar goes through MA scripts, VRCFury scripts, d4rk scripts, and then you finally get some kind of an overall result that's obviously a completely different structure from what you had in editor mode. I think this message warns you about the fact that d4rk will perform its actions only after MA/VRCF runs its run, and this means that the benefits of optimizations it's reporting may be different in reality, but that works in your favor because it'll probably end up optimizing even more stuff. Play mode is kind of a baking process for the avatar nowadays, all of the advanced scripts and special logic gets applied to it when you press play.

decent resoniting resoniters. They did in fact fix the performance. Even with a bunch of shit in the world it ran as well as vrchat runs (mostly full FPS with dips as stuff loads in.

Charitably, I think the rest of the game is about comparable with vrchat too, once you get used to its way of doing things and where they put all settings and shit in the menu. If you're used to vrchat though it does grate pretty hard--those constant "ooh, why the fuck did they do it this way?" or "why can't I do this simple thing X" feelings you get when switching between any two complex programs. But I think if you stick to simple stuff like just sitting around and chatting, taking photos, watching videos, it works just as well as vrchat does--better since you don't need to paypig for vrc+ prints or whatever.

However if you're doing anything more complex, it's still extremely complicated and pretty unstable. I had like 6 crashes to desktop. Hopefully they can focus on stability now, plus making the UI less grating to people used to vrchat.

I'm not even on VRChat yet, but I can give some advice.
First of all ask yourself what is "being popular", then ask yourself if that is something you actually want.

If you really want to be popular in VRChat, perhaps because you weren't in school and you want to know how it feels, then go ahead.

I guess the most efficient way to become popular fast is to first of all know your circle of people well.
Do everything they seem to like and talk about, but you have to be kind of subtle about it, otherwise you will come off as fake.

For it to seem and actually be natural, you and your circle of people's interests need to align.
You might be able to make yourself like things you don't currently like, the human mind is very malleable and usually the easiest solution to problems is to change your view and attitude, rather than the actual problem.

I was rereading the kind streamer anon's post about video hosting and (if my interpretation is correct) it sounds like the most elegant/scalable solution is via some cheap or local storage plugged into a CDN. You also mentioned google cloud works, but I'm going to take this a step further: what exactly is wrong with just hosting on google drive? An account gets 15gb free and it seems to work just fine on standard vrc video players. Is it a security issue? Will google auto copyright strike my chinktoons even though it's my personal storage? will the link suddenly break when more than 3 people are watching? This seems too simple and headache-free to be true to me.

Asking because I don't want to advertise an event and then have everything fuck up at the last second like a jackass.

Essentially this; it works until it doesn't, and there's no recourse if it breaks. Dropbox also used to be a relatively easy way to host videos but also historically has broken in unpredicable ways, as does litterbox. Since with all of them, hosting videos for playback isn't in their TOS (to be fair, cuckflare also says not to host videos through them, but I have high assurance they don't actually care, but not for google drive).

I think google drive specifically also has the problem that it actually transcodes your videos vs serving the raw bytes; so you get slightly worse quality than hosting it elsewhere. Not that it practically matters that much of course, but it's one more thing to think about.

Generally yes; GCP and other cloud storage operate at high enough scale they don't notice small-time streaming (whereas public gdrive links have been abused by streaming sites for years so they do care). However with GCP know that you also only get 100GB of free bandwidth a month before they cut you off (or start charging you, presumably). There are also operation limits which I don't think will matter, but vrchat video players are sometimes pretty spammy with HTTP requests, so it might. I haven't actually used GCP personally, I just know they have a (sort of) generous free tier compared to like S3; so caveat emptor.

If you're willing to buy a cheap domain, I think the backblaze b2 / cuckflare combo is still the cheapest way to get known hassle-free video hosting. And a domain is mildly useful for other things too.
