In my travels I somehow lost my umbrella but at least found a lantern to light my way. I proceeded to the highest point I could see, on a hill, and there I found a marshmallow! Not a bad reward, but I couldn't pick it up. So that's it. Oh yeah there were also scattered pieces of a skeleton and a crash landed UFO on the map, but those aren't important. No most of ours are imported models from other sources. Only a few have truly made from scratch models.

Most people don't create them from scratch but rather mix together, edit and compose already available models from 3D sources. This is still a good amount of work and makes the end result unique. Basically yes, they do make their own model compositions.

It is completely fine to use models from Avatar pedestals. There are a lot of good and high quality ones out there. Just remember that you will never be unique that way, can't change models to your liking or add fun gimmicks or even attend the theme nights. Also creating Avatars is simply fun once you get the hang of it and is part of what makes VRC so addictive.

Porting from MMD models is completely fine and easy to do, you should definitely do it and it will instantly make you a lot more unique than using pedestals. Allthough the end result might not be as high quality.

Limited dissolve is the best shit. Why the hell is it not included in the big tutorials as one of the primary decimation methods?

It's basically planar decimation except you can manually select the stuff you want in edit mode (with ctrl+l if you want to get the whole part) and just hit x and select limited dissolve to do it right there. Same options as planar decimation.

No fussing around with deleting shapekeys, no need for vertex groups, no need to jump into modifiers, no need to worry about the whole mesh going kaput when you just want to planar decimate a small part.

Are there any downsides I'm not seeing?

Should I use the cloth asset for a cape or just dynamic bones? I'll need to put a collider on my body for the cape. Is that bad?

It's billions of polys per second, not frame. As a raw measurement it's pretty useless, but in the context of 'is 65k going to perform worse that 20k' in VRchat', the answer is no. There are many other things that bottle neck performance before such a modest increase in polys.

Skinned Mesh renderer draw calls are definitely way heavier than a world draw call, Where static mesh draw calls can be batched and be essentially "1" draw call, a skinned mesh renderer can't be batched and is animated and dynamic. it has to be noticeably heavier. Of course not, but when the poly's become an issue is unclear and we don't wanna just magically hit retardedly high poly levels. Besides, the point of a high poly model is to bake normals from it. You don't usually use the high poly sculpt in production, especially not here in VRChat. I saw some people posting Divinity models before, they look beautiful and they're only 9k polys with a well done high poly sculpt -> normals/heightmaps done.
The MMD modelers are mostly amateurs making their models so high poly

Yeah I paid 60 more than that for mine, 180 is below MSRP. They dipped greatly. Maybe a 1060 6gb can supersample a bit higher? But I've had no issues in Onward or VRChat at 1.5 super sampling in both, used to get 2.0 Super Sampling in VRChat before performance died after the camera update invaded
