Hey /vrg/, never played Pavlov before, but I'm having trouble playing it with Index controllers. It says they're supported, but I can't reload with them and opening the menu feels very buggy too? Touchpad also shouldn't act as movement when the sticks already do. Is there a way to fix all this?

I don't know how helpful simracing knowledge is going to be for normal driving, but I guess it could help you get comfortable with the idea of driving.
My favorite sim is Assetto Corsa, but some people here prefer Project Cars 2. Both are on sale right now, and either one should be fine.
I think the G29 and shifter combo that I use is a good entry level setup, but you can look at the /ovg/ guide for more options. A T150 might be a better choice if you don't care about driving manual.

We have our own pavlov server and we usually play on it.
A decent amount of vrg has contractors and another section of vrg has onward. The contractors guys are more likely to host games and fill it up the lobby and there's probably going to be a contractors session this weekend.
Contractor guys are looking at workshop support so it could be resurrected soon.

Here's how the vrchatDoom pickups work - all the ammo objects have a unique collider and when the gun's "collector" collider enters it, the ammo is added to the total. This is normally a problem because if you want to do any kind of logic with the OnEnterTrigger, you have to set the trigger to check certain layers (is the shotgun colliding with the shell ammo layer or the bullet ammo layer, is the shotgun colliding with the large shell ammo layer or the small shell ammo layer etc), but vrchat uses up all but 8 of the unity layers and that's not enough for a complicated game world with lots of different object-to-object interactions using the normal method.

So the solution is put them all on the same layer and prepare the colliders with different y-offsets depending on the ammo type. All the weapons still have matching collectors, but they're attached by a fixed joint and don't inherit y transforms from the gun. This means the collectors are always at the correct height for the matching pickups regardless of how tall or short the player is or how they're holding the weapon. Because the height is fixed, the trigger doesn't need to know what the collector is colliding with, so I can free up all those layers. There's a disadvantage to this method, but not in the kinds of 2.5d levels used by Doom.

For anybody curious, the valve index works quite well with Assetto Corsa, definitely a big step up from the rift. I got a solid 144fps on a 1070ti, all the realtime shadows and lights are crisp, and the controllers work well with the steamvr virtual wheel. It's a little bit broken since for some reason the A button maps to the grip and toggles grabbing the steering wheel, but there's still enough to bind accel/brake/clutch and paddle shifters. The slight FOV increase also is nice, but mostly that 144hz feels a lot better than 90.

I don't know if it's worth $1000 still, but at least for driving sims, it's a clear improvement over rift instead of a marginal tradeoff.

Finally got the Index in, headset itself is fantastic and a huge upgrade over the vive, but the knuckles controllers are going to take a lot of getting used to over the vive dildos. At least giving them a run-through in Onward, the knuckles controllers are dogshit for shootyman games, the triggers are atrocious and gripping at least for the time being is awkward as all hell. I can imagine gripping guns getting easier with time, but the triggers are a huge detractor if you play VRFPS a lot.

More like, what purpose the rooms have. Dungeons and typically underground, which is a complex and time consuming thing to construct, so excess and superfluous rooms always throw me off. If you can give some theming/props to the rooms that justify their inclusion in the dungeon, even if some are just for vague 'storage' or whatever, it's a lot more interesting to explore as you want to look for things that should exist, like the armoury to find new weapons or a mage's room where magic scrolls are kept that could help you. Making the rooms all have a purpose means you want to explore them all and means players aren't disappointed by dead ends if the dead end was still something that aided them and was worth the fight to get there.

There needs to be risk in travelling from one to the next - traps littered throughout the place in odd places and not just in the middle of every path. There has to be reward too. Shiny collectables, pieces of lore, armour and weapons, enemy encounters... Even if there is just a corpse next to a number scrawled in blood on the wall for how many rooms you've been through to take selfies with and prove your progress. The danger though is what makes it best. Increasing risk as you go further through makes it all the better especially if you give people the option to cash out every so often or continue and risk dying with nothing.

Quest has major limitations on vrchat. Most avatars are blocked unless they're built for the mobile unity platform and even those that are okay have chrllenging limits like 5k total Tris. It's a sort of prototyping tool, easy to lay out a bunch of 3d stuff. You can export to unity as well. For single objects, google blocks is nice, more of a vertex modeling approach. Tilt brush is more of an art program, you draw 3d brushstrokes basically. I don't like tilt brush as much, but give it a try. If you want sculpting, oculus medium, kanova, and masterpiece VR (expensive).
