I’m working on an avatar with a fishing rod and am trying to get a fishing gesture working. I have it set up so that there is a fish object with multiple different fish that are switched between each other using shape keys in a looping animation. From what I understand, freesync just makes it possible to drive a monitor's refresh rate at below its max framerate, for when your gpu is struggling to provide frames at a full 60fps (or more). VR headsets have to run at a full 80/90+ fps all the time to prevent motion sickness, so they instead have the driver synthesize frames in-between what the game is producing, e.g. every other frame. Slowing down the refresh rate with freesync would probably just be worse.

The CV1 controllers are better than the index controllers. Not a lot better, but you'll miss the weight and balance of them, and the finger tracking of the index doesn't work reliably enough to be anything other than "cool i can flip people off now".

They are. If I could use my touch controllers with my index, I would in a heartbeat. The index controllers are about 50g heavier than the touch controllers, even including the AA battery, finger tracking is unreliable, the joysticks are awful. The only thing that's marginally better about the index controllers is the palm strap, but the controller is so big and bulky that it adds basically nothing to the experience being able to open your palm fully. I keep the straps loose most of the time so it's easier to take them off.

-finger tracking is unreliable
-joystick issues (still happening or fixed)
-no AA batteries

What else should I know before getting this on an impulse101? Is the screen a notable upgrade? Is the sound mindblowing or lackluster? Is the tracking honestly more precise and accurate than the Rift S, because I have heard some say there is slight jitter with lighthouse.

The index headset itself is pretty good, and the sound is probably the best part of the index. I like the offset headphones/headspeakers quite a bit. I've heard that the rift S little speakers are quite bad in comparison, but haven't tried them personally. The built-in mic in the index is also good, FWIW. The screen is better, but I wouldn't say groundbreakingly better. SDE is gone, but you just notice the aliasing instead. fov is better but you're still looking through binoculars. Comfort on the index might be better than the rift S, but I can't speak to that. Oh, if you have an IPD outside the rift S's range then index is probably worth it since it has a physical slider to control that.

The tracking is probably better overall, though more hassle because you have to hang up lighthouses. Tracking behind your back really only matters for vrchat body language, but if that matters to you, index is slightly better. as is the upgrade path to full body tracking.

Thanks anon. This helps when paired with the knowledge of the Rift S I used. I have normal IPD but I still think adjustable is the better option. I would hate for software IPD to become the norm. A bit disappointed on the FOV not being vastly improved but it is what it is. I also read there is lots of light bleed with the nose gap on the index, though I suppose one could play in the dark with Lighthouse tracking!

So i've been playing Stormland and I can't for the life of me get it to calibrate player height correctly. Standing fully upright the game thinks i'm scrunched down in a crouching position and when I actually crouch my viewpoint goes down to the floor.

I've done the "Hold your arms out sideways" calibration several times, it makes no difference. It's fine in any other title i've tried. Any ideas?

Kind of a weird thing to ask. I mean they're about as far apart from each other as anything in the same genre could be. VRchat is great for hanging out, Neos is awesome for being creative.

The real question I've always had is why Lavender has always had so much more hype than Neos. I've found that strange, since one is already performant and has been playable for a long while yet has zero brand awareness. It also does the gmod in vr thing and scripting that seemed to be the draw people were talking up in Lavender, still hardly any interest in that.

What's there is fine but the UI itself is so unintuitive you can't figure things out on your own. There will be a UI overhaul going through before the end of the year which will help usability a lot.
As far as monetization they have a shitcoin you can buy. Think there is a plan to add a proof of authorship system to assets and make a marketplace. If it were me though I'd go after the professional stuff. They already partner with a university lab but I think some prototype demos for engineering or architecture are where there could be a bit of money for a good VR app.

Valve probably wants to avoid disconnect between your real hand and what's happening in game so the only melee weapons I see them doing are Combine stun sticks that would send enemies flying back.

Sound like your sensors aren't compatible with your USB ports. I had a similar issue where they'd use most of the CPU and give errors, even on the recommended PCIe expansion card. Lighthouse tracking isn't perfect with Index controllers, either. When aiming certain directions my controllers change angle slightly or lurch forwards. COMPOUND just got another weapon update.
It's pretty fun to akimbo and works great if you dig sawn-offs in Pavlov.
Other weapons are pretty interesting too, >Grenade launcher that plays like TF2 Demoman's sticky projectile gun.

The sensors use cameras and when each was in a corner of my space I would lose tracking from time to time combined with at least once every 2 or 3 hours of use I would very briefly lose tracking as my sensors randomly disconnect for a moment. The base stations I set up once and have never lost tracking so far and give me full 360. I think upgrading to index might be a better experience for me with the base station tracking alone, I wouldnt mind the upgraded res or fov either. The main issue is that they only connect to the Rift headset. You'd have to have a device that provides that function that SteamVR will accept at the same time as a lighthouse tracked headset. Making them a lighthouse tracked object is more doable.

At the easiest it's just a mod that changes the camera and character position as you move your head, at worst even just doing that breaks a bunch of shit because things were originally written with a single screen, world position and viewpoint in mind. Croteam talked about the process of porting their games to VR without the kind of VR support you already get on an engine like UE4. M9 is like shooting blanks, but the Glock on single works, despite supposedly firing the same projectile. Just a word of warning, if you're using rechargeable batteries in your controllers, like the touch controller AAs for example, make sure you have a decent charger.
The little "mini" chargers that come with a couple batteries often don't actually have any sort of smart charging or load levelling circuitry.
I bought one, an official "Energizer" charger, and it just has a hidden 18 hour timer. Which means it will happily overcharge your cells and damage them.
Batteries are advanced enough these days that it is unlikely to cause fire or damage but still keep it in mind.
Please, make sure you're using a "Smart" battery charger, it'll keep your batteries healthier for longer.
