I can't even laugh at HL VR, I just feel depressed. It's like an entire older era of gaming's dead. HL and HL2 defined a whole fucking generation of game development and engines, and now it's come to this. This is the industry now. Every company we once liked is fucked. The good old days are gone, man.

Like tears in the rain.

We can't know for sure the game will be good, but it is safe to say it will be better in VR than it would be otherwise. Other similar games have already proven that VR is an excellent platform for this type of game. Your argument is also completely backwards. Valve is making the game for a smaller audience where it will sell less because they think this will make it a batter game. This is what we need more of. The biggest problem with the industry is that developers spend so much on making games that they have to make them appeal to as wide of an audience as possible. You end up with games that are decent enough, but don't have a really strong appeal to anyone. There is no room for low budget small teams or anything experimental and risky. However, you will still mindlessly trash Valve because you only care about having the game for yourself rather than the actual quality of the game or the implications on the video game industry.

this isn't going to catch on as strong as HL2 or be as revolutionary as people claim

generally if you bought or built a good PC anywhere from 2002-2004 you could play HL2 at >= 30 fps most of the time, something that anyone claiming to be a PC gamer could achieve even back then. after you got done with HL2 you could seamlessly go back to your other beloved games. VR is being sold for the price of an entirely new platform except it isn't even self powered, the only way you can drive an AAA game at respectable speed is by already owning a $1500+ setup. the buy-in price to play a single game and maybe some other shallow VR curiosities is too high. the footage we've seen doesn't seem to showcase anything new to VR. we've had VR with hand tracking and body movement and interaction since 1991, the only thing that has gotten better is latency, graphics, and price (which it's still a big price for the average gamer)

You're only spending more money because Valve is telling you to to get you to buy their ((((proprietary)))) VR headsets. Yes you can play it on others but they aren't exactly advertising that fact.
