Bought a Rift S the other day and I'm loving it, but sometimes it randomly crashes on me. Normally I just need to reset the Oculus service, but earlier today I had a bigger crash where I had to restart my PC to fix it since it wasn't detecting my Rift after. Is this normal for the Rift S? Anything I can do to avoid the crashing?

Hmmmm... would the risk be worth it. Not to mention the logistics of forcing a lot of people into the beta branch; I suspect a lot of stragglers that won't be able to come due to the barrier of entry being a bit annoying. Specially newfriends which is what the event is for mainly.

Also UDON is annoying to make with as well oof. Not too used yet on it, we've tried it a bit but it's... definitely alpha build tier. As a small example, No zoom and out on their noodle code system makes making something complex on it a really painful journey. There's also bugs getting found out from time to time. It's really best to wait to use udon when it's out of beta for some semblance of base stability.

udon is a bit trickier than "just do it on the beta".

In terms of the editor and new udon SDK it's at least as painfully unpleasant to use as the old triggers and while it's much more extended than triggers in terms of features, it takes more work to get the same results and is chock full of bugs and missing functions. Since you can't mix triggers and udon, you have to recreate old functions that triggers used to do.

For example: For a while on udon it was impossible to teleport a player because the trigger teleport is gone and nodes for player functions were all returning errors when you tried to access them. To work around no-teleports in Udon, you had to move the world respawn point, turn on the old vrc combat system and hit the player with lethal damage to "teleport" them to a new location.

The player api has since been fixed, but I don't know how many other essential things are missing and I don't really want to spend this month trying to invent workarounds for features that might be essential for valentines but missing in udon and then see those things fixed in a later udon patch, while also trying to test and implement a world on a tight deadline. Sorry. The old valentine's map kind of still works, watched a streamer go through there with a big group very recently.

There's actually an advanced form that we are targeting that would allow a rolling system so you don't need a host, just tagging yourself with a "participate" tag from a button that you can stop participating as well so you're just in the lobby area of the map.

The idea is for the map to not need a host to organize and can continually roll through shuffling "participants" every 5 minutes and makes it sure that you have someone partnered with. If it's an odd number of participants one of the rooms becomes a 3-way conversation.

If that is hard to do, just reconstructing what was done last year would work. It's basically a string of timed teleports that is coded in from the very beginning to specific rooms. Each platform has a specific sequence of rooms they teleport to every 5 minutes. And it makes sure everyone eventually gets paired uped. Problem is people can't join in once it starts and when people tap out, rooms starts to have non-pairing as it rolls through the teleports. The advanced form we're aiming for should solve that; if only it gets figured out.

Basically you get forced into a room with another person for 5 minutes at a time. If the map started with 20 persons, you get to meet 19 other persons and talk with each of them 5 minutes at a time.
Very helpful for meeting new /vrg/ anons and even just to get to know people you haven't interacted a lot before.

Here's the old stuff from last year: If a player is standing on platform n when the event begins, iterate through the matching sequence of teleport destinations. Those histories will do a round-robin for every participant to meet everyone else assuming a full group of 20 (or more if people share a platform and go through as wingmen or whatever) You're welcome to do it yourself, getting someone who can get it done is the most important thing, the main reason I did it last year is because there was nobody else at that time and I'm glad to yield it to you.

I seriously can’t get my Quest Link to stay without freezing after a couple minutes. I tried the USB C port on my mobo which should be USB 3.1, and it doesn’t even register. Same with the USB 3.1 A port on the mobo. It only works on the front panel USB 3.1 port but then it freezes after a couple minutes. What the fuck is the problem? Do I need to buy a USB C PCI panel?

The official cable works better than longer amazon data cables, don't let people convince you otherwise. The issue with inexpensive cables is signal attenuation caused by capacitance. Basically when you have an oscillating signal (data) next to another cable, the laws of induction apply, and causes the voltage on the other data line to change. Checksumming etc. handle some of that, but the real way to fix that is to use a cable that is properly shielded for the data rate. This issue becomes more prevalent the longer the cable, when a cable loops around itself etc. The Quest is using USB-C to it's maximum potential, so you need a really good cable for it to work reliably. It's worth the $80 if you want it to work reliably.

The early VR games that use teleport locomotion are the most comfortable to play but just playing anything will work towards getting your VRlegs. Don't try to bruteforce it though, stop when you feel at all sick.
Stuff like Budget Cuts and Crisis VRigade tided me over until I could play games with movement like Pavlov or Blade and Sorcery, even then I had to take it easy for a while. VRchat in seated mode with the third person movement was also comfortable and easy to play for hours at a time so long as your FPS can keep up. A fan at the front of my playspace pointed towards me helped a lot too.

They fixed the tracking on the Cosmos, and since it was so shit at launch you can find one for $100 more or for the same price as the rift now, and they're in stock everywhere. I broke down and got a Cosmos and don't really regret it. The tracking is now on par with my friends quest, so if you shoulder a rifle for too long the tracking gets a little janky, but that's just going to be inside out tracking. "machine learning" can only do so much guess work when you occlude the controller for 30-40 seconds.

I wanted inside out, I don't have an area to dedicate to VR and am forced to move my PC around my house to play.

Yes but bear in mind that the porting process is a bit fiddly and still requires some blender and texture work. The eyes in particular need modifying to not clip horribly when eye tracking and you'll have to do because you don't look like even more of a soulless husk. The polycount is also quite high, even moreso with skintight clothing exported from the game. It has a fully modelled cunny as well as bones to control the anus so maybe that makes up for all the work.

It's a bunch of free surprisingly robust multiplayer VR games. Main ones being a TDM laser tag with fun weapons, kinda campy paintball CTF with okay weapons, battle royale with all the weapons, parkour climbing race thing, some 3-4 player PvE dungeon crawls, and disc golf. You can make your own game modes and maps too, albeit only within their own assets, but there are some cool escape rooms and stuff.

Downsides is that public lobbies are full of actual kids, and the private lobby system has small caps, so you awkwardly have to split into groups of 3 and 4 for the most part, up to 4v4 on the official FPS modes. battle royale has up to 18, but you're stuck with pubbies (kids). >>277813176 we did get a hack working to enable up to 10v10 on the FPS modes though, so this aspect is less of a downside.

Definitely worth trying with a few friends, especially the dungeon crawls.

Just finished exchanging my USB 3 PCIe card for a new one. The new one had a USB C and A port as well, using the new ASM3142 chipset instead of ASM2142. Oculus recognised the Quest connected to the USB-C port but said it wasn’t USB 3, but the USB-A port with an adapter connected fine, I just had to flip the cable upside down in the adapter.

I’m thinking the cable is the larger issue, so I’ll order the Quest Link cable.
