I'll need three vive trackers ($300), a way to attach them (trackstrap, $100), then I hear they have battery problems so will need 3 powerbanks ($90). So $490 + shipping/tax total?

that's why. As shitty as udon is, getting free working multiplayer servers with voice chat and full IK avatars is pretty compelling. Even the little things like VR locomotion and pickup interaction are tricky to do right starting from raw unity.

It's also really powerful being able to get people who are already suited up in VR with their friends to go into a portal and check out your game or gimmick. Compare that to the friction of downloading something on steam or itch, putting the headset back on, then trying to regroup with the people you know through lobby codes, or steam's invite system (which is hopelessly broken to interact with steamvr overlay).

I hope that someday valve makes some sort of VR-native lobby system, where you can group up with other friends and chat with basic avatars and then open a coordinated "portal" into a specific multiplayer game lobby, then drop back into the lobby when you get tired of that game.

VR gamedev is just regular 3d gamedev with fancier inputs. /agdg/ is a decent thread to find resources, and /3/ for graphics stuff. You'll want to use either unity or unreal for an engine; I've heard unreal is more friendly if you're starting from scratch with no programming experience, but unity is also fine with lots and lots of tutorials, including the official ones for free.

Depending on how you're motivated, you could also try some vrchat development, which is weird and limited but also a really nice way to start and get people to play your game, for the reasons mentioned in >>324858480 . Use UdonSharp and a lot of basic unity c# tutorials are also directly applicable. Don't use the Udon graph editor, it's a really awful interface on top of the thinnest, leakiest of abstraction layers over unity's c# API, so you basically have to learn c# anyway to get anything done.

If you're really starting from scratch, go take basic computer science courses and learn your algorithms first. There's not a lot that's specific to game "backends" beyond what's specific to 3d rendering.

Skyrim VR melee is garbage. Blade and Sorcery enemy weapon swing animations are too quick and abrupt IMO. Hellsplit: Arena (on Steam) has fluid enemy animation and strikes a good balance on speed, but lets you waggle your way to victory. If Hellsplit fixed the waggle shortcut it’d be perfect VR melee.

Secretly, I’m a developer looking for the best melee system to copy for a Quest-standalone casual DNDish multiplayer game. Thinking something like Gauntlet, or Arizona Sunshine but sword and sorcery. Archery, magic, and knife- and axe-throwing all seem straightforward in concept, and have numerous best-practice examples to copy. It’s the core mechanics of fun, good melee combat that elude me.

Part of the problem is that traditional MMO gameplay loops don’t transfer well to VR. If melee fights are gonna last more than one or two swings, the player needs to keep swinging which may get tiring. And if they’re physically good at blocking incoming strikes, the game might be too easy... or if they’re not as coordinated, it might be too hard... a player’s stat sheet can’t make up for klutzy arm movements.

Another game on my list to try is Karnage Chronicles. It’s a multiplayer dungeon-crawler, but only on PC and not Quest standalone iirc

It’s best if players don’t need perfect accuracy to block incoming enemy strikes, because this can’t be satisfyingly simulated in real-time with network lag (just talking PvE here). More thoughts: when involving player stats, some combination of strength + fatigue seems ideal for determining if blocks are successful. Timing and aim should also be important, but accessible to players who aren’t pro fencers or looking for a 1:1 swordfight simulation.

When fighting is too easy, it’s usually because either 1) waggling is OP or 2) the player can run right up to enemies and stab them in the face. Fixing 1) is straightforward; require the player’s hand to translate as well as rotate to build up strike momentum, or require each strike to be “charged up” with a wind-up a la Ironlights. Fixing 2) is more difficult. At a first approximation, players shouldn’t be able to teleport inside of/up to enemies mid-fight. Perhaps enemies’ personal space should also be off-limits in the same way as poking the player’s head through world geometry. Enemies could also automatically react with kicks and shoves if a player gets too close, maybe while guarding their face... I need to get a sandbox going to playtest this stuff. Just been dicking around with the UE4 editor so far

In zombie games, it’s very unsatisfying when headshots aren’t one-hit kills. Likewise, in VR swordfights, it’s unsatisfying and immersion-breaking when solid cuts/stabs to exposed flesh don’t have an obvious effect. In a typical fantasy MMO or dungeon-crawler, the only effect of a melee hit is the enemy’s health bar decreasing. In VR, maybe enemy health just gets replaced with fatigue, sort of like how “luck” replaces HP in Uncharted. Enemies will block most swings (appropriate to skill level and player strength) until you wear them out, at which point their guard falls (maybe very obviously; they fall to one knee, panting) and you can give them the coup de grace, i.e. stab them in the chest or the head. Until their guard falls, you also have a chance of slipping a swing past their defense, but it’s much lower. Surrounding an enemy has obvious advantages in that they can’t block attacks outside the frontal vision cone.

For the most part. I can tell that im looking at a monitor instead of a "window". The phone video makes it look a lot better.
