It's pretty rare for people to do full modeling completely from scratch. Most people will download different assets that they like and then kitbash them together in blender and unity to create an avatar.

There are many possible ways, though some of the easiest aren't possible purely in avatar shaders (requires feedback, i.e. a camera and render texture, which while you can put those on avatars, they only show for friends iirc). Trail renderers are probably easiest to figure out at first and might be enough for some effects. Particle systems are more flexible while also still being fairly easy to figure out, and if you add enough of them along your joints, the afterimage could be convincing enough.

Getting more advanced, you could make a copy of your entire avatar, change the materials to render transparently, then add spring joints between all the bones of the afterimage avatar to your real joints. Then it'll smoothly trail behind your real joints. And you can repeat this a few times for more afterimages that trail each other. I actually made an avatar like this way back in 2018, can't find the webm demo I made of it though.

If you are advanced enough to prompt an AI to make your own shaders, it might be possible to stretch out the vertices of the copies to make it less discrete. But you are still limited by not having a feedback buffer to work with, or motion vectors. The spring joint hack is essentially using unity's physics system for feedback; you could probably do something similar with physbones now days, though I dunno exactly how you'd do the same as a spring joint there.

i think there should be simple tools like this for world creation built in to udon instead of people having to rely on a community tool

nta, the whole vrchat systems are fucked since they are consistently updating it. they have to update it so stuff doesn't bit rot but eventually stuff will stop working. in the past they've managed to make the vast majority of old worlds work, but at some point they'll run into a wall just like with cyantriggers. I think the system is broken, an idea that i had was to branch off into vrc2 or beta options (but more agressive than they've been doing) so that old shit doesn't have to be touched. ofc that comes with its own challenges.

I've been keeping quiet about this, but my opinion of VRChat has become negative over past few months.

For various different reasons. One of them is in regards to the SDK breadth.

The VRChat SDK has "incomplete" portions tool creators have to fill in. This has become the norm.

It’s almost like VRChat is an early access game developed by a small indie sized team which constantly have to switch projects and resources to users demands because everyone wants something from this very unfinished leading VR project growing at a faster pace than development.

Sure they shouldn’t expect the community to make features for them but one of the ideas of VRChat is you can make pretty much whatever you want or need. They can’t do everything and some stuff will fall to the community if they want it. Like any game that allows you to.

Like honestly if you want basic shit, you don't have to understand anything beyond super basic stuff. Even then you can just use a prefab. For anything more complex, Udon is infinitely better. It's basic programming in a very accessible language (C#). There's basically no excuse at this point.
