why can't I join my friend, and more importantly why can't I see them online in my friend list, only when i search for them?

The cheap chinese PCI-E USB3.1 Type-C adapter that I ordered arrived this morning and I just got around to installing it.
First impression on seeing the card was "Fuck, that looks CHEAP", it very visibly had a cheap build quality. However, I went ahead and installed it in my system, taking up the second PCI-E x8 slot, and connected it to the 12v sata power rail.
Upon booting my system up the card "just werks", no driver installation required, my system now has two powered type-c 3.1 sockets on the back and I am fully ready for the oculus quest link when it becomes available.
I have been testing it and it is powering my quest just fine, file transfer is working flawlessly, as far as I can tell these sockets work perfectly.

If any other quest users here have a computer which does not natively support USB3.1 (Type-C is not required for link but fuck it, right?) then I'm sure I can dig out the link for you, I think this sort of device is kind of a minefield and there are many out there which likely don't entirely work.

Speaking of the Quest Link, could some knowledgeable person answer a confusing question for me?

My motherboard has two standard USB 3.1 sockets and two USB 3.0 Type-C sockets.
Which would be better to use with the link? The old style 3.1s or the new style 3.0? It's a strange configuration I agree.

Off the top of my head I would assume that the standard 3.1 sockets may actually be faster than the C sockets because they are only 3.0, HOWEVER, then I have to take into account that I won't be using the fancy fibre-optic link cable, only a regular USB cable.

If anyone who knows about this sort of thing could enlighten me that would be so appreciated.

You'll probably just have to experiment when you get the cable assuming it doesn't just werk in the first port you stick it into. A lot of USB chipsets can have variance. Cables will also have variance. So if it doesn't work on one port, you just need to try others and keep going until you get one that works.

My GPU, an RX 5700 XT, does not have a USB-C/VirtualLink connection. Considering that it is a very recent card it really should but that's AMD for you.

Whew. Just got my new rig set up finally, and warmed my Rift S up with Minecraft VR and The Forest while I wait for a few more substantial games to finish downloading.

A bit disappointed with the handling/optimisation of both to be honest. Minecraft just felt a little off perspective wise, caused a little eye strain, even if nothing too severe. Still annoying given it's a game to spend hours in. The Forest was oddly low res at distance, even with resolution and setting turned to high, with massive amounts of the scenery only popping in when I got within a few hundred feet, with no setting to change it.

All that said, using the spear like an actual spear was great.

I had my doubts too and almost dismissed the game for not having B&S like combat.
You don't need realistic physics to be fun. In a game like this it would become pretty fucking exhausting and easy to exploit. It feels more gamey but has a good flow to it. It's more learning the enemy's timing and attack patterns and getting into that rythm.
The game is more than just a combat grind as it still has it's RPG elements. There is a lot of puzzles solving of fucking around with contraptions to figure out how they work.
It's not just some arena battle.

I am excited to get my hands on the 8KX and see how it compares to my Vive-1 in flightsims especially.
It might actually be effective for virtual desktop use as well now and will be a big step up for me in the ppd department but I am worried that the color and black levels will look like ass coming from OLED.
The valve index seems to have nicer looking colours but the pixels are larger and FoV is significantly less. still the gap between the pixels looks fairly low.
The one big advantage the index has is the higher panel refresh of around 120Hz or so which would be easy to notice.
On the 8KX I get around 170 degrees hFoV paired with a higher pixel density the biggest trade-off being that the panel refresh is currently 75Hz and might be bumped up to 90.
Index should be easier to drive since the panel resolution is lower but hitting max refresh would be difficult as well.
On the 8KX hitting 4K per eye native at 75Hz is very taxing but I could still switch on the upscaler turning it into an 8K+ basically.

I need to do a lot of experimentation and see what works best until hardware that is powerful enough to drive it to its full potential is available. I hope that the eye tracking solution module will be effective with foveated rendering.

I've read some comments from flightsimmers stating that ppd is more important to them than FoV.
With the 8KX I can get the best of both, but I am curious what people would favor for flight sims when the tradeoff is between FoV and refresh rate.

With high FoV I don't have to turn my neck as much and can notice moving objects at the edge of my vision even if it is distorted.
For higher refresh rate though it would be easier to judge how fast your approach is when landing/air refueling or lining up for a shot.

I am torn, additional situational awareness from FoV and better perception of speed from frame rate are both important.
Still the high refresh won't mean squat if you can't hit it and putting in filler frames in between renders.

At native resolution, it'd definitely be worth trying virtual desktop stuff.
I doubt the color is much worse than an Index since it's not OLED either, but I'm not sure how good the Pimax panels are.

I've not played flightsims extensively, but I imagine PPD is more important for spotting tiny planes in the distance than fov. Going from rift cv1 to index, the black levels of the LCD panel are annoying, as is the glare with any high-contrast scene, but it's definitely a lot crisper. Hey there boyos,
A little while ago I posted about my Oculus Touch having a little issue, namely the right trigger getting stuck in the "Input" position sometimes. This of course caused issues, mostly in FPS, where I would continue to fire after releasing the trigger.
1 - The Cause

I realised that it was the "outer side" of the trigger that would sometimes get stuck inside the controller. Now, this would be slight, but enough to keep the trigger from releasing fully. Why it happened, I don't know.\
2 - Fixes

It is known enough that a tiny rubber bit get's stuck in there after a few months of using the Oculus Rift. If you have this issue, check if you can see this rubber half disk around your trigger. I had this, and as advised, I removed it.

The press seemed easier then, but the trigger was still getting stuck often enough to be annoying.
The fix I found is... basic. Stupid, even. As you can see in the picture above, I put a bit of tape on other side on the trigger. This way, the trigger is drawn in the "released" position, and to the left ( as this is the right controller ). Now it can't get stuck in that lower part.
I expect I will have to change the tape in a while, but fuck me, it works.

I can't tell Yak from Messerschmidt until I was closing in for a gun shot.
On an actual monitor on the other hand was far easier to identify aircraft in the distance.
I just couldn't go back to playing flight sims on a monitor, it is a very different experience.
One area VR sucks is if you are playing multiplayer and need to use the keyboard to type.

The contest was part serious (because of money prizes) and part shooting the shit.
The only legit judge, who considered effort and creativity was VCD. The rest gave out scores willy nilly.
I will admit that other entries deserved better recognition but I wouldn't disregard the time and opportunity they had on the stage since a lot of people got to know them better.

I drink because I enjoy the taste. My tolerance used to be one or two beers for a stopping point but now it's several shots before I'm feeling warm. Simply too expensive to get drunk now and I never really enjoyed it as much as being tipsy. Have you been playing any other vr games? I tried Windlands 2. It's fun enough to swing around like spiderman but the game seems to be like most of other vr titles, Has a gimmick or two and that's all it has. It also has multiplayer but the only interaction you seem to have with others is doing highfives.

Anybody want a good hunting sim in VR? We have that one finish on a lake solo game but a game like TheHunter would be fantastic in VR. Real time passing n such. Start a hunt at a nice early morning time setting and maybe a hour in you have a friend or 2 join? Go hiking a bit. Maybe you don’t even get anything but you idle chatter in a deer stand or on a hillside and take some nice shots with a camera of the scenery? so I decided to go ahead and try undead development because it did look good on the steam store page, turns out it's pretty damn hard to try to nail most things to an opening to your house like furniture and computer desks and beds as they only break down to a piece it's kind of hard trying to nail a square to a doorway when trying to really force it to nail I ended up losing my hammer and 2 pieces of barricade material to world sized clippings. also it appears the only place you can barricade yourself in is the house you spawn in zombies move very slow and a headshot seems to be the only way to really put them down for good, so you have to build your barricade with being able to shoot well over the waist otherwise you will probably waste an entire mag on 1 zombie. I'll play it more some other time to see if any of it changes
